Social Enterprise & Place-Based Impact
Northstar’s commercial-strategy work doesn’t stop at the SME balance sheet. Social enterprises, community development trusts and place-based regeneration projects carry a different kind of bottom line — one where community value, funder confidence and long-term local ownership matter as much as commercial viability.
We bring the same evidence-led rigour we apply to SME market entry to these organisations, plus something most strategy consultancies don’t: the ability to coordinate the wide, multidisciplinary delivery team that place-based projects actually need to get built.
What we do
Market and feasibility assessment. Visitor data, community need, funder landscape and comparable-project benchmarking, so decisions about acquiring, repurposing or launching a community asset are grounded in evidence rather than ambition alone.
Funding and business case strategy. Building the commercial and social case that funders, councils and members need to see before committing capital to a community-led project.
Programme coordination. Where a project needs branding, design, web, content or physical delivery alongside the strategy, we coordinate a network of specialists — web developers, graphic designers, interactive artists and makers, photographers and videographers, archival researchers — so the organisation deals with one accountable partner instead of managing half a dozen contracts itself.
How we work
A five-stage framework, built for how social enterprise and place-based projects actually move from idea to delivery:
- Feasibility & Evidence. Visitor and community-need data, funder-landscape scanning, and benchmarking against comparable places and projects — so the case for acquiring, repurposing or launching an asset is grounded before anyone commits time or capital to it.
- Governance & Asset Readiness. For trusts taking on a building, a lease or a community asset transfer, we help think through the governance, risk and readiness questions early. [Confirm scope: do we advise directly on asset-transfer process/risk, or primarily coordinate and refer to legal/surveying specialists? Match to how Callander was actually handled.] Title, lease and planning specialists are brought in as needed — that’s specialist legal work, not ours.
- Business Case & Funding Strategy. The commercial and social case funders, councils and members need to see: financial modelling, grant narrative, and a credible route from ambition to funded project.
- Delivery Coordination. Where the project needs branding, web, content, signage or physical delivery alongside the strategy, we assemble and coordinate the specialists — from our network of 100+ — into one accountable team, so the organisation manages one relationship instead of half a dozen contracts.
- Sustainability & Handover. A long-term operating model and a clear path to full community ownership and management — including, where a project succeeds, what a next phase or a second site could look like.
This framework is flexible — a funding-strategy review might only need Stages 1 and 3; a full asset acquisition and rebuild draws on all five.
We scope each engagement to where the organisation actually is.
