Focus on Scotland: Whisky and Heritage drive the economy

This week, we’re dedicating our time, effort, and resources to exploring how Scottish businesses contribute to the national economy. Why, you might ask? For two very good reasons.

I had previously paused our “Focus on Scotland” series following some rather disheartening comments I came across on LinkedIn—remarks suggesting one needed to be Scottish to succeed in Scotland. But recent collaborations with exceptional SMEs across the country have reminded me of one simple truth: nonsense is vastly overrated.

So, with renewed enthusiasm, we’re back—and more committed than ever to celebrating the innovation, resilience, and talent thriving in Scotland’s business community.

This week, we turn our attention to the very heart and soul of Scotland: its rich heritage and world-renowned whisky industry. These aren’t just cultural treasures—they are powerful economic engines, driving growth, employment, and global prestige for Scotland and the wider UK.

Scotch whisky exports play a pivotal role in the Scottish economy, serving as one of its most significant sectors.

The industry is responsible for a substantial portion of Scotland’s exports, particularly in food and beverage, and generates considerable economic value through production, supply chains, and related activities.

Likewise, heritage-driven tourism, encompassing visits to historic sites, castles, museums, cultural festivals, and ancestral experiences, is a cornerstone of Scotland’s visitor economy.

It balances out the country’s extraordinarily rich cultural and historical assets to attract domestic and international visitors, while contributing significantly to economic growth, particularly in rural and island communities.

Scotch Whisky: A Global Appeal

 

Scotch whisky is predominantly an export-oriented industry.

It is estimated that around 99% of production is usually shipped overseas. Being able to travel a lot, I can say that every time I mention “I am from Scotland”, the table turns to ask me if I can recommend any unique or boutique whisky. Of course, this doesn’t come as a surprise.

Scottish Whisky’s exports account for approximately 74-77% of all Scottish food and drink exports, 25-26% of UK food and drink exports, and about 1.5-2% of total UK goods exports.

Key recent trends include:

  • In 2022, exports hit a record £6.2 billion in value, marking a 31% increase from 2018.
  • 2023 saw exports valued at £5.6 billion, despite global challenges.
  • By 2024, export value dipped 3.7% to £5.4 billion compared to 2023, though volume rose 3.9% to 1.4 billion 70cl bottles (equivalent to 44 bottles per second). The United States remains the largest market, with annual exports worth about £1 billion.

These exports have faced headwinds like tariffs, economic slowdowns, and global events, but the sector’s resilience has helped maintain its economic footprint.

Heritage-driven tourism: a Scottish Sensation

 

Scotland’s whisky distilleries, historic towns, and cultural landmarks are more than just beautiful reminders of the past—they’re also engines for sustainable growth. From family-owned boutique distilleries drawing connoisseurs from around the globe, to major heritage sites that anchor Scotland’s global reputation, the sector continues to punch far above its weight.
